 President Julie’s Page

Happy 35th Birthday, Sterling Chapter!  I received a letter from National Headquarters.  The opening paragraph read, “The entire National Support Team sends congratulations to the members of Sterling in the anniversary month of its founding on September 17, 1974.”  (I’ll read the complete letter at our September meeting.)

We will have the installation this evening for our incoming Treasurer, Cindy W. and the re-installation for Joyce as Vice President, Beth as Secretary and myself as President.

I have received an invitation for the Council of Clubs Reassembly Tea that will be held September 10 at the Central Bank Financial Center.  The guest speaker will be Mary Doerhoff Winter.  I look forward to sharing in this gathering with our Council of Clubs representatives who so faithfully attend the monthly meetings on behalf of our chapter.

Please note in this bulletin info from National regarding the 2009-2010 Management Resource Package that you can research.

I look forward to seeing each of you at our September meeting with anticipation and gratitude for all your efforts.

Sincerely,

Julie W., President

Your ABWA 2009-2010 Management Resources Package:

With the new award year upon us, you’re surely busy getting Sterling off to a running start. After all, it’s that time of year! The summer draws to a close, our routines resume, vacations end, and everyone gets back to work. Before, Presidents utilized cumbersome notebooks each summer, “hitting the books” to prepare for an exciting and prosperous year.

Well, not anymore! In case you haven’t yet had the opportunity to explore WIN, we’re excited to announce the 2009-2010 Management Resource Package (MRP) is available exclusively through WIN, allowing ALL ABWA members to search, download, edit and print over 100 tools – doubling the amount of information we were able to share in the 2008-2009 MRP.

Please share this exciting news with members of Sterling and encourage everyone to explore the MRP, located in the National Library in WIN. All the tools you have come to expect (plus many, many more!) can be found organized by category with descriptions to help guide individuals and leaders to the information relevant to their project at hand. Additionally, every item in your library is searchable by utilizing the “Knowledge Object Search” to find specific education by keywords.

These interactive tools, modifiable documents and high-resolution images and videos simply won’t fit in a binder! With the ability to share much more information in a more efficient and innovative way, we look forward to continually adding to the large reserve of ABWA leadership training and tools in the Women’s Instructional Network throughout the year.

P.S. If you or members of your team are looking for instructions on how to log in to WIN for the first time, visit: https://www.abwa.org/pdf/MembersOnlyLoginInstructionsPDF.pdf

                  General Membership Meeting Minutes

                                August 6, 2009

Julie W., President welcomed 11 members and 1 guest to the Sterling Chapter General Membership Meeting , beginning 6:10 p.m. @ Panera Bread conference room.

Reta M. led the Invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance.

A self introduction and “icebreaker” was that of each person saying what their favorite color was and why.

Denise W. introduced our guest speaker, Shauna Kerperin, Director of Parents as Teachers @ Blair Oaks R-II School District. This program is funded by the Dept of Elementary and Secondary Education.   About 200 families are enrolled.  Early childhood development programs/ communication have a profound effect.  All school districts in Missouri have Parents as Teacher groups.  Home visits are made with parents and children.  This networking enables parents to learn best practices for parenting. or receive needed support and information about children’s developmental skills, health, hearing and vision assessments.  This program is free to parents.  Shauna distributed written materials explaining program in greater detail to everyone present.

Julie W., President conducted the business meeting.

As a motion was made by Barbara C., seconded by Bev F. for approval of the secretary’s July 2009 minutes.  The General Membership approved this motion.  Bev F. made the motion to accept treasurer’s report.  Barbara C. seconded the motion and it was approved by General Membership.  Reta M. made a motion to transfer $100 from the SMRF account to general checking account. Barbara C. seconded the motion and General Membership gave approval.   It was agreed that Local Chapter dues may be paid now instead of waiting until September.   The Standing Rules were published in the August bulletin for everyone to read .

Voting to adopt the Rules will take place in September.

Cindy W., Treasurer elect will be installed at meeting in September.  Other officers elected by acclamation will also be reaffirmed.

No one will attend the National ABWA Conference in Kansas City.

Ruth C. will be the Chairperson for Munichburg Festival.   Signup sheets for working that day and bake sale items were passed around.

Helen B. will help with decorations.   Julie W. will supply canopies for shading us and the baked goods.  Barbara has the ad banners.

Cindy and Art may secure tables and chairs.  RADA items are available.

The Osage County newspaper published photos of two ABWA scholarship recipients.  Please give any news accounts to Pamela K.

Local Chapter Committees broke out for their respective discussions.

Julie W. shared information with the Membership Committee which came from National ABWA and a Zonta news clip regarding recruitment ideas .   Just a reminder to Hospitality Committee that December plans must be made soon.

The “mystery woman” was Barbara C.   Please give more “mystery” Newsletter items to Bev F.

The August meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m. with Reta M. leading the benediction.

                                    Respectfully submitted,

                                    Beth R., Secretary

                           Executive Board Meeting Minutes

August 6, 2009 @  Panera Bread Conference Room

Julie W., President, called the ABWA Executive Board meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.

Theresa B. will give a “vocational talk” in October at the General Membership meeting.   Dynamic Discussion is tentatively scheduled for September.

Local individual membership dues are to be paid by the end of September.

National ABWA expense for year is $100.  Treasury doesn’t have funds to cover this charge.   The Executive Committee recommends transfering $100 of the funds set aside for SMRF into regular checking account.  General Membership would need to vote on this.  Carriette F. shared the auditing committee report.    She will pay National ABWA $100 as soon as possible.   When funds become available a donation can be made in memory of Paul Kolb who was a former “Boss of the Year” in ABWA.

Cindy W. will be installed as Treasurer in September.

There was a brief discussion regarding possible meeting sites for ABWA.

Julie reminded us that Sterling Chapter will be hosting the December 2009 and June 2010 joint gatherings with LaVida.   It will be best to make reservations early.

Certificates of Attendance were signed and ready for distribution.  2009 Committee volunteers, Barbara C.and Denise W. signed up to monitor ABWA website.  Pam K was interested in scrap booking.

Respectfully Submitted,

Beth R., Secretary

INVOCATION

Lord, in the quiet of this hour,

we come to thee for wisdom and for power,

to view thy world through only love-filled eyes,

to grow in understanding, to be wise,

and sure to see thy guiding light, and thus

to know each other as thou knowest us.  Amen

BENEDICTION

Oh guiding spirit, guardian of our days,

be with us as we go our separate ways.

Help us to feel those thoughts that lift and bless,

to know a closer bond of friendliness,

to see thy beauty always – every day,

translated into living – this we pray. Amen
