President Julie’s Page

Celebrations…we recently celebrated our 35th anniversary of Sterling Chapter on September 17 and one week later the national organization of ABWA celebrated 60 years on September 24.

I would like to welcome our guests and members for our fall event where we recognize ABWA and what membership entails.

At the time of this writing we are preparing for the upcoming Old Munichburg Festival, which is a wonderful time to gather as members to work together in friendship and to financially build our scholarship fund by way of our bake sale and Rada products.

I had the privilege of attending with Carriette F. and Joyce R. the recent Council of Clubs Reassembly Tea.  The speaker, Mary Doerhoff Winter, conveyed to each of us how we individually can build our “blocks” for the betterment of all.  There are so many ways to do this; we just need to look around to those in need.  More details from this gathering will be shared at our meeting.

I look forward to seeing each of you at our October meeting with anticipation and gratitude for all your efforts.

Sincerely,

Julie W., President

Julie W., President welcomed 12 members and 1 guest to the Sterling Chapter General Membership Meeting, beginning 6:45 p.m. @ Perkins the conference room.

Barbara C., led the Invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance.

A self introduction and “icebreaker” was that of each person saying what musical instrument they played in High School or which they would choose to play and why.

Theresa B., introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Brian Mitchell, Superintendent, Jefferson City Public Schools.   He outlined his progression of beginning in Bolivar, Missouri to his current position as the Superintendent of Jefferson City Public Schools. Brian supports early childhood education partnering with the community.  His routine includes visiting all the schools, working with the local community, various committees, the Department of Education, Data Base warehouse, desk audit of school, attendance, graduation rates, drop out rates.  The total district enrollment has increased by 200 and is following trends. The short-term goal for high school is a task force to study need and cost for establishing a new high school.  Brian invited everyone to the “Open House/Dedication” at Pioneer Trails Elementary School.

Following the speaker, President Julie W., conducted the business meeting. Cindy W., Treasurer-elect was installed and the other officers were reinstalled.

A motion was made by Bev F., seconded by Pamela K. for approval of the secretary’s August 2009 minutes.  The General Membership approved this motion.  Bev F. made the motion to accept treasurer’s report.  Joyce R. seconded the motion and it was approved by General Membership. Julie W. read a congratulatory letter received from National ABWA for Sterling Chapter’s 35th anniversary.

It was announced that an invitation to the Council of Clubs Reassembly Tea was received. Helen B., Carriette F., Joyce R. and Julie W. will attend.

There was nothing to report by the Education/Scholarship Committee.

Fundraising at the Old Munichburg Festival was discussed.   We will host a bake sale, including Rada and bottled water.  Cindy W. will inventory Rada and order enough products for fundraiser.  The National publication Women In Business magazine and ABWA Membership application forms will be made available.  Barbara C. and Denise W. are publicizing event.

A condensed version of Barbara’s submitted newspaper article regarding scholarships was published in the local News Tribune. Our web site managers are Barbara C. and Denise W.  See www.sterlingabwa.com

Pamela K. is accepting articles for the ABWA historian scrapbook.

Denise W. made the motion and Theresa B. seconded the motion to adopt The Standing Rules. The general membership adopted said Rules.

Local membership dues need to be paid as soon as possible. No one will attend the National ABWA Conference in Kansas City. President Julie W. announced the “Dreams to Reality” event information. Tickets will be available after November 1.

October is the Membership Tea. Theresa B., Stacey B. and Carriette F. will send invitations to those whose names are supplied to committee.  Joyce R. will be our hostess for October ABWA meeting/tea at her home.

The “mystery woman” was Julie W. Please give more “mystery” newsletter items to Bev F. The September meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m. with Barbara C. leading the benediction.

After the benediction, we celebrated Sterling Chapter’s 35th anniversary by eating a specially decorated cake.

Plans for the future include, Carriette F. hosting the November meeting at her home.   Christmas is coming soon and LaVida Chapter ladies will join us for a social event at Alexandro’s Restaurant.

INVOCATION

Lord, in the quiet of this hour,

we come to thee for wisdom and for power,

to view thy world through only love-filled eyes,

to grow in understanding, to be wise,

and sure to see thy guiding light, and thus

to know each other as thou knowest us.  Amen

 BENEDICTION

Oh guiding spirit, guardian of our days,

be with us as we go our separate ways.

Help us to feel those thoughts that lift and bless,

to know a closer bond of friendliness,

to see thy beauty always – every day,

translated into living – this we pray. Amen
